James (Rich) Powell

James (Rich) Powell, 94, of Nelsonville passed away unexpectedly on June 26 in Berea, Ohio. Born on January 15, 1932 in New Floodwood, Ohio he was the son of the late Joe and Marie (Warren) Powell.

After graduating Buchtel High School, he proudly served his country during the Korean War while stationed in Japan. His service in the US Air Force reflected the sense of duty and dedication that characterized his life. Following his military service, he worked at Westinghouse in Columbus, Ohio manufacturing household appliances until the plant closed. He then worked in Environmental Services at The Ohio State University Hospital until retirement.

Above all else, he was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. He was always ready to help whenever one of his children needed him. The loss of his wife of 66 years, Faunie, five years ago left an emptiness that never truly healed. He missed her every day, and those who knew him saw the depth of the love they shared. While his family deeply grieves his passing, they find comfort in knowing that he is now reunited with the love of his life.

He possessed a sharp wit and good humor, especially when his children lightheartedly teased him with their impressions of him. He had a lifelong passion for Ohio State football, always looking forward to football season and watching the Buckeyes.

In addition to his parents and beloved wife, he was preceded in death by his daughter, Cindy Roman; son, Danny Sturgeon, great-granddaughter, Makaila Haye; five siblings (Ruth Hook, Harriett Chalfant, Bonnie O’Naill, Billy Joe Powell, and Betty Yost); and several nieces and nephews.

He is survived by his children, Kathy (Steve) DiPerna, Richy Powell, and Susan Powell; as well as six grandchildren (Justin, Larissa, Jimmy, Gemma, JoAnne, and Mindy); seven great-grandchildren; one great-great grandchild; his sister, Vera Davis; and several nieces and nephews. His memory will forever remain in the hearts of those who knew and loved him.

Visitation will be held on Monday, July 6, 2026, from 6-8 PM and funeral services will be July 7, 2026, at 11am, both at Warren-Bown Funeral Home in Nelsonville, Ohio. Lunch will be served at the Nelsonville Wesleyan Church Social Room following burial services at Greenlawn Cemetery.
